Claudio Pellegrini's 75th Birthday and Career Celebration

On October 1-2, 2010, over 80 participants gathered on Catalina Island off the coast of California to celebrate the life and career of our own Prof. Claudio Pellegrini, on the occasion of his 75th birthday. The event "Towards a 5th Generation Light Source", sponsored by the department as well as the UCLA Division of Physical Sciences, featured a workshop entitled "Towards a Fifth Generation Light Source", and a session dedicated to Claudio's sweeping accomplishments across many fields, with a particular emphasis on the X-ray free-electron laser (FEL). The workshop was timely, as the first X-ray FEL has now commenced operation at Stanford, thus opening the door to imaging of atomic-molecular systems at the relevant time (100-femtoosecond) and length (Angstrom) scales. Between the forward-looking workshop, and the moving tributes to his past work, Claudio's ongoing contributions to revolutionizing scientific instruments were appreciated by all in attendance.
