I will review various theoretical approaches for the description of charmonium production at RHIC. Scenarios which involve in-medium formation (recombination) are examined in the light of initial experimental results. Predictions for spectra are contrasted with scenarios which follow from an extrapolation of fixed-target results. We discuss utilization of results from these scenarios to probe the nature of the produced medium.
