Many aspects of hadron production in high energy nuclear collisions can be understood by applying recombination and fragmentation to hadronize partons. In this talk I will review the basic principles of recombination and fragmentation models and how they are applied to data from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. I will also discuss some recent developments in this field.
