bullet The May issue of Scientific American features an article by UCLA professor of physics and astronomy Zvi Bern and colleagues about the ways in which new discoveries of how ordinary particles behave under extreme conditions at the Large Hadron Collider have helped scientists in their search for exotic particles and forces and have breathed new life into the search for a unified theory. bullet Keck's MOSFIRE achieved First Light on on April 4, 2012. Ian McLean reported that his team had a successful two-night run despite the fact that the weather did not cooperate and they battled clouds on both nights. bullet This week’s Nature published an obituary of David Sayre, written by Janos Kirz of LBNL and John Miao. Sayre and Miao are widely considered as two pioneers of the coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) field, also known as "lensless imaging" or "coherent diffraction microscopy". CDI is now one of the fastest-growing fields in X-ray science. See the Nature piece in detail.
